The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a remarkable 62 per cent increase in the nation’s grid wheeling capacity over the past decade, rising from 5,000MW in 2015 to over 8,100MW as of today.
The disclosure was made on Monday in Abuja by TCN’s General Manager, Transmission Service Provider, Oluwagbenga Ajiboye, during an interactive session with energy editors.
“Our wheeling capacity has grown from 5,000MW in 2015 to over 8,100MW today, thanks to strategic investments and donor-supported projects like the World Bank-funded Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project (NETAP),” Ajiboye said.
Key highlights of TCN’s achievements in the last 10 years include:Addition of 3,100.5 MVA (equivalent to 2,538MW) of transformation capacity through the energisation of 24 power transformers.
Completion of over 30 major transmission projects, including new substations and lines that added more than 2,000MW of wheeling capacity.
Delivery of 16 additional power transformers now in store, plus three more (510 MVA/408MW) undergoing installation.
Near-completion (average 90%) of the strategic Abuja Ring projects, including new 330kV and 132kV substations at New Apo (Pigba), Wumba-Lokogoma, Lugbe West, Kuje, and Gwarinpa (already commissioned).
Ajiboye also revealed that TCN is rolling out a modern Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for real-time grid monitoring, while over 1,000 technical staff have received advanced training in the past two years.
On regional integration, he noted the successful test synchronisation of the Nigerian grid with the West African Power Pool (WAPP), strengthening Nigeria’s position as a regional energy hub.
Under the leadership of Managing Director Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, TCN has implemented the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion, and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP), driving re-conductoring of old lines, transformer replacements and upgrades, and widespread digital transformation.
Notably, the grid recorded an all-time generation peak of 5,802MW and maintained an impressive 421-day streak without any system collapse between July 2022 and September 2023.
Ajiboye commended in-house innovations, including an IoT-based solution developed by TCN engineers that provides near real-time visibility of generators and substations to the National Control Centre, a feat achieved even before the recent unbundling of the company.
While celebrating these milestones, he urged energy journalists to help communicate the progress to Nigerians, stressing that “these achievements are commendable, but they must be effectively communicated to the people.”
