Taraba Police Arrest Man Over Illegal Firearm Possession


The Taraba State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to the command, the arrest was made during a stop-and-search operation in Karim-Lamido Local Government Council.

The command’s spokesperson, James Lashen, stated in a statement to journalists on Sunday that the arrest took place at about 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 27.

The suspect, identified as Gali Yunana, was intercepted by a team of Mobile Police officers from the 40 PMF Jalingo, led by ASP Bitrus Benson, in the Munga Lelau area.

“Yunana, a resident of Munga Doso village, was found in possession of a British Beretta pistol with its breach number deliberately erased, along with two live rounds of ammunition,” the statement read.

The police statement said the suspect confessed during interrogation that the pistol belonged to his late brother, Odoji Yunana. Authorities added that the case is still under active investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, praised the officers for their diligence and reiterated the command’s dedication to eliminating illegal weapons and criminal activities in the state.

“This arrest is a direct result of the Command’s ongoing security review in Karim-Lamido. We will continue to intensify our efforts to ensure the safety and security of all residents,” said the police.

The police called on members of the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
