A suspected gas explosion in a Taiwan department store has killed four and injured 26, prompting an investigation.

A suspected gas explosion at a department store in Taichung, central Taiwan, has left at least four people dead and 26 others injured, including tourists from Macau, fire officials confirmed on Thursday.

The blast occurred on the 12th floor of the Taichung Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store, where construction work was underway. According to the fire department, the explosion caused significant damage from the ninth floor upwards.

Among the casualties, two of the deceased and five of the injured were tourists from Macau. One of the injured remains in intensive care, the health ministry reported.

Fortunately, the food court on the 12th floor was closed at the time due to ongoing construction, potentially preventing further casualties.

Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, has called for a swift investigation into the cause of the explosion, urging authorities to determine the exact circumstances behind the tragic incident.
