The project was implemented by WaterAid Nigeria with funding from Armani Beauty Project in partnership with the Bauchi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA).

The project serves not less 15,000 people in the 10 Clusters that make up the 30 benefiting communities.

Daily Independent visited some communities of
Unguwar Sati Lere,, Bunza, Rugan Luje and Sabon Garin Yola Gital, Muntokshi Fada and
reports that water boreholes were sited at strategic locations within the communities where the residents could gain access freely.

A House wife, Maryam Haladu, a resident of Unguwar Sati in Lere Community who sells provisions said that prior to the construction of the water facility, residents usually fetch water from wells and streams contaminated with animal faeces and refuse dumps.

According to her, the construction of the water facility in her community has reduced incidences of waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera, and diarrhea as they now have access to clean water.

“The Water facility has also encouraged women including parents to engage in irrigation farming to augment the family income” she said

Haruna Yusuf, a Mechanic and a resident of Bunza community in Tafawa Balewa said that residents of the community are now happy because of the citing of the water facility in their community because it has restored sanity and peace in many families.

“Before the construction of this water facility, we suffered so much to get water. We usually trek long distances to streams to get water which is usually contaminated with human and animal feaces and other dirty things. We had no choice, but to fetch the water for our domestic chores.

“Our children were always fallen sick and we were always spending money in the hospitals for treatment of diseases such as typhoid, cholera, diarrhea, but now the story has changed because they now have access to clean water” he said

Haruna said that he was trained alongside his colleagues on the maintenance of the boreholes, where starter packs were given to them, adding that the boreholes are working perfectly and they are protecting the boreholes from vandals.

Charity Gideon, another resident of Muntokshi Fada community said that before the construction of the water facility, she had concerns every time she had her menstruation monthly because she has to trek to the stream to get water to clean herself.

“I only had my bathe one a day because of lack of water. As a lady, one has taken her bathe at least twice or thrice in a day when menstruating to maintain hygiene, but I could only bathe once because of lack of water. Now, the story is different because I now access to clean water and I can bathe as many times as I want” She said
