Nyesom Wike, the
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, took a jab at Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party during the 2023 presidential election and party’s Governors Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed, following the Supreme Court’s judgment against the Rivers State government.
Wike questioned whether they would continue supporting Governor Sim Fubara, who has been accused of disregarding court orders.
The Supreme Court ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation to halt allocations to Rivers State until Fubara stops illegal activities.
It also mandated that funds would only be released once a lawful Appropriation Law is enacted under Speaker Martin Amaewhule and directed the 27-member Rivers House of Assembly to resume duties immediately.
Wike praised the judgment as a victory for the rule of law and a step toward ending impunity in Rivers State.
During a press conference in Abuja, he criticised the disregard for court orders and stressed the importance of upholding democratic principles. His remarks underscore the political tensions within the PDP and the broader implications for governance and accountability in Nigeria.
Addressing the men of the press on Friday in Abuja Wike said, “This are some of the things we see in this country, when you say something people will start to carry blackmail and would fall trap to that.
“For me, it’s happiness for Rivers people and Nigerians that yes this impunity must stop, enough is enough. You are aware when the issue of local government came up, a governor elected who has taken oath to abide by the constitution, came out to say that it’s a corrupt judgment.
“But we thank God, today the apex court had said it all, go back you have no budget; Central Bank and Accountant General, you can’t continue to release money when there is no government.
“Until you present your budget to the appropriate assembly, which is the 27 members, no money should be released.
“You refused to follow the electoral act in terms of conducting the local government election, what was the issue?”
