The Supreme Court has dismissed appeals challenging the candidacy of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, following the withdrawal of suits by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The decision paves the way for Aiyedatiwa to contest the poll scheduled for November 2025 without legal impediments.
The PDP and SDP had initially filed appeals questioning the validity of Aiyedatiwa’s nomination, citing alleged irregularities in the APC primary process.
However, in a surprising turn of events, both opposition parties withdrew their suits, citing a lack of sufficient evidence to sustain their claims and a desire to focus on their campaigns.
The Supreme Court, in a unanimous ruling, struck out the appeals, affirming Aiyedatiwa’s eligibility to run.
“This is a victory for democracy and the will of the people of Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa said in a statement shortly after the ruling.
“I remain committed to delivering good governance and building on the progress we have made.”
The PDP’s candidate, Agboola Ajayi, and SDP’s Bamidele Akingboye, in separate statements, expressed their intent to shift focus to grassroots mobilization ahead of the election.
Political analysts suggest the withdrawals may reflect strategic decisions to avoid prolonged legal battles that could weaken their campaigns.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in Ondo State, with recent reports of local government chairmen accusing Aiyedatiwa of diverting funds despite a Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.
These allegations, however, have not been directly linked to the withdrawn suits. With the legal hurdles cleared, attention now turns to the November 2025 governorship election, where Aiyedatiwa faces a competitive race against opposition candidates in a state known for its vibrant political landscape.
The APC has expressed confidence in retaining the governorship, while the PDP and SDP vow to mount formidable challenges.
