Super Eagles To Face Gabon In 2026 World Cup Play-off

Nigeria is set to face Gabon in the semi-finals of the African zone play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following the conclusion of the qualification group matches on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles sealed their place in the play-offs after a convincing 4–0 victory over Benin Republic earlier in the day.

Gabon, meanwhile, secured second place in Group F with a 2–0 win over Burundi, helped by Ivory Coast’s dominant win against Kenya to top the group.

Elsewhere, DR Congo clinched a narrow 1–0 victory over Sudan to finish as runners-up in Group B behind Senegal, while Cameroon advanced from Group D after placing second to Cape Verde.

The play-offs, which will feature the four best runners-up from the nine African qualifying groups, are scheduled to take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16.

Nigeria, expected to retain the highest FIFA ranking among the four nations when the latest standings are released on October 23, will take on the lowest-ranked side, Gabon. The other semi-final will see Cameroon battle DR Congo.

Both semi-final matches will be played on November 13, with the winners advancing to a single-leg final on November 16. The overall winner of the tournament will proceed to the inter-confederation play-offs in March 2026 for a chance to qualify for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The matches will be played as single-leg encounters, with extra time and penalties used if the scores remain level after 90 minutes.

Morocco will host the mini-tournament, which provides Africa with one final opportunity to secure an additional spot at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

All nine group winners from the African qualifiers have already booked their place at the 2026 finals, while the play-offs will determine whether the continent can add one more representative through the inter-continental route.
