The economic hardship gripping Nigeria has impacted widows, leaving many struggling to survive. This stark reality spurred Total Life Concern (TLC), a humanitarian group, to call for urgent intervention funds to empower widows across the country.
“Widows are in the throes of economic hardship,” declared Mrs. Edirin Essiet, founder and executive director of TLC. “Examining their plight, I realized the urgent need to provide healthcare, food, and shelter to these vulnerable women.”
Essiet painted a grim picture: “Thousands of young widows are left helpless, facing extreme poverty and food insecurity.”
TLC believes that empowering widows is not just a humanitarian act but a crucial step towards eradicating poverty, promoting gender equality, and fostering inclusive economic growth. Essiet explained: “By empowering widows to support themselves and their families, we can address the social stigmas and harmful practices that often exclude them from society.”
These practices, such as forced isolation and remarriage can further exacerbate their vulnerability.
For eight years, TLC has been working tirelessly to empower widows through various initiatives, including skills training, access to resources and community-building. “Our aim is to empower up to one million widows to increase their income, build assets and achieve economic independence,” Essiet said.
Despite their efforts, TLC recognizes the limitations of their work and emphasizes the need for government support. “Widows are not receiving the help they deserve. Their petty businesses are struggling, and they need government assistance to overcome these challenges,” Essiet lamented.
To provide immediate relief, TLC recently distributed food items to 250 indigent widows in Lagos and Jos, offering a glimmer of hope during these difficult times. This act of kindness brought joy to many families, some of whom were struggling to put food on the table.
Mrs. Roseline Ogbeide, president of the Ajah Women’s Association, expressed her gratitude for TLC’s support, stating: “Since my husband’s demise, no tangible support came from my family members, but this organization has been very supportive and helpful.”
Uwana Joseph, another beneficiary, shared her joy, stating: “I have been praying for help to get a sustainable income for my children, and God heard the cry.”
TLC’s work serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the crucial role of NGOs and community support in uplifting vulnerable members of society. By empowering widows and providing a lifeline during challenging times, TLC is not only improving individual lives but also contributing to a more just and equitable society.
