Student Injured As Police Arrest Suspects Over Ebonyi Varsity Election Disruption

Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with an attempt to disrupt the announcement of results during the Student Union Government (SUG) election at Ebonyi State University.

The suspects reportedly fired gunshots to disperse the crowd during the announcement of the election results.

On Tuesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrests in a statement.

He added that one student was hit by a stray bullet and was immediately rushed to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for medical attention.

He said, “The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.”

SP Ukandu further warned, “We will not tolerate acts of violence during any electoral process. Anyone caught endangering lives will face the full weight of the law.”

The Commissioner of Police for Ebonyi State, CP Adaku Uche-Anya FDC, reassured the public of the police command’s commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order across the state.

“Our priority is the safety of students and staff. We are determined to ensure that democratic processes on campus are conducted peacefully,” he said.

This recent disruption mirrors earlier unrest in academic institutions, such as in July at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, where the Students’ Union Government election also degenerated into chaos.

Reports from that incident showed students scaling fences while gunshots rang out, smoke filled the venue, and some youths wielded knives to intimidate voters.

SP Ukandu emphasized the importance of collaboration between the university, students, and the police.

“We call on all stakeholders to cooperate fully. Peaceful elections are achievable if everyone acts responsibly,” he said.
