The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is expecting a response from the Ministry of Education by tomorrow, Monday, as its two-week warning strike enters its sixth day today, Sunday.
Speaking to our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday, ASUU National President, Prof Chris Piwuna, said, “We are awaiting feedback from the ministry on Monday.
There’s nothing further to report at this moment.”The strike, which began on October 13, 2025, after a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government expired on September 28, follows stalled negotiations over critical issues.
Piwuna described the action as “total and comprehensive,” in line with ASUU’s National Executive Council’s decision.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has affirmed the parliament’s resolve to mediate and curb further escalation of the dispute. On Wednesday, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced that talks with ASUU and other unions were nearing conclusion.
He noted that the Tinubu administration had released N50bn for Earned Academic Allowances and allocated N150bn in the 2025 budget for university needs assessment, to be paid in three installments.
ASUU’s demands include finalizing the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, releasing three and a half months’ withheld salaries, ensuring sustainable funding and revitalization of public universities, and ending the alleged victimization of lecturers at Lagos State University, Prince Abubakar Audu University (formerly Kogi State University), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
The union also seeks payment of 25-35% salary arrears, promotion arrears pending for over four years, and the release of withheld third-party deductions, such as cooperative contributions and union dues.
