Stones Backs Foden To Return To England Squad

Manchester City defender John Stones believes Phill Foden’s impressive form will give England manager Thomas Tuchel a selection headache ahead of next week’s final World Cup qualifiers with Serbia and Albania.

After winning Player of the Season in the 2023-24 campaign Foden, struggled for form throughout 2024-25, registering just seven goals and two assists in the Premier League. Injuries and limited game time ultimately resulted in him losing his place in the England squad.

This season has started brightly for the 25-year-old, as he and Manchester City look to have put the struggles of last season behind them. The winger scored twice against German side Borussia Dortmund in City’s 4-1 win in the Champions League.

Speaking with the club’s website, Stones stated that Fodedn deserves a recall to the Three Lions’s squad.

“I’m just so pleased for him,” said Stones. “I’m a big fan of Phil, of everything (he does), how he plays the game, how everything just comes so natural to him.

“I’m so pleased that he’s back on the scoresheet, back happy, enjoying his football. I think that’s when you get the best out of him.

“I know he wants to be (in the squad). He’s been a huge part of it, I know that the manager loves him.

“It’s a privileged place to be, and we’ve all got to fight to be there and earn the shirt, but I think without a doubt, he’s given him a good headache for selection.”
