Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday paid tribute to his late wife and former First Lady, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, during a thanksgiving service marking the 20th anniversary of her passing.
Speaking at the Chapel of Christ the King of Glory, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Obasanjo described the late Stella as a woman who lived a life of service to humanity.
“I missed my wife,” the former president said, adding that the memorial was held to “celebrate a life of service.”
Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, who died on October 23, 2005, served as Nigeria’s First Lady between 1999 and 2005.
Her son, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo, also reflected on his mother’s legacy, describing her as a caring and protective parent who instilled discipline and life values.
“She was caring, protective, but would not tolerate deviation,” he said. “Her laughter, kindness, and life lessons will be forever missed, and her legacy will live on.”
Delivering the sermon, the Pioneer Chaplain of the Aso Villa Chapel, Prof. Yusuf Obaje, spoke on the topic “On Duty for God and Nigeria’s Greatness.”
He described Stella Obasanjo as one whose name has been immortalised for her service to humanity, saying her life reflected commitment to God and country.
Former Ogun State Governors, Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, also paid tribute, describing her as a loving and supportive woman whose contributions remain unforgettable.
Daniel recalled naming a motherless home after her during his tenure as governor, while Amosun noted that she elevated the office of the First Lady and served Nigeria with dignity.
Her younger brother, John Abebe, remembered her as a cheerful and compassionate person who always brought joy to the family.
“She had a unique way of doing things and could make our parents smile even in difficult times,” he said.
