Sowore Slams DSS Over Alleged Demand to Deactivate His Twitter Account

Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of demanding the deactivation of his Twitter (X) account, calling it a “national disgrace” orchestrated by the Tinubu administration.

In a scathing post on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Sowore revealed that the DSS sent a letter to X, giving a 24-hour ultimatum to suspend his account, following what he describes as ongoing persecution for his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and corrupt state governors.

Sowore, founder of Sahara Reporters, stated, “This morning I woke up to yet another act of national disgrace… a ridiculously crafted letter from the DSS to X (@OfficialDSSNG ), demanding that my Twitter account be deactivated within 24 hours.”

He suggested similar demands might target his Facebook page, where his anti-government posts have gained traction.

Labeling the move unconstitutional, Sowore called it a “desecration of national dignity” by “outlaws” operating above the law.

The activist tied the incident to a broader campaign against him, including DSS-organized protests last Tuesday at the Federal High Court and Ministry of Justice, where hired demonstrators demanded his arrest for criticizing Tinubu.

He recounted prior harassment, such as being placed on a “no-entry” list at airports by the Nigerian Immigration Service during the #EndBadGovernance protests, having his passport seized in February 2025, and a recent arrest where eight armed police officers allegedly broke into his cell, injured his hand, and dragged him to court on trumped-up charges.

Sowore further alleged that the government falsely accused him of “terrorism financing” in court last week to justify further attacks, including by state actors posing as “Tinubu supporters.” “Who are these supporters, if not the leadership of the DSS, the @PoliceNG, and other security agencies that have become conscienceless?” he questioned.

He condemned the DSS for exporting this “disgrace” to Twitter’s U.S. headquarters, signaling Nigeria’s governance by “incompetent and dysfunctional citizens.”

Recalling similar DSS tactics under the Buhari regime, Sowore predicted their failure: “The leading actors will once again disappear into obscurity.”

Neither the DSS nor X has confirmed the letter, and the Nigeria Police and Immigration Service have not responded to inquiries.

Defiant, Sowore vowed to persist. “The struggle against these criminals continues ceaselessly with or without a Twitter account, with or without Facebook, and whether I am in jail or outside of it,” he declared, urging Nigerians to resist being “held hostage by a tiny, wicked, inhumane band of rogues.”

Rights groups have called for probes into Sowore’s allegations, amid growing concerns over shrinking civic space in Nigeria.By Fatima Bello, Abuja
