Southern Kaduna Farmers Protest Herders’ Attacks, Demand Action

Aggrieved farmers in Southern Kaduna, predominantly women, staged a dramatic protest on Saturday, painting their faces black and marching barefoot to the traditional ruler’s palace in Manchok, Kaura Local Government Area, to demand urgent government intervention against repeated attacks and farmlands ravaged by armed herders.

The demonstration, which persisted despite prior suppressions on Wednesday and Friday, highlighted the escalating herder-farmer conflicts that have left communities on the brink of famine.

Protesters, led by local women’s groups, forced their way into the palace of the traditional ruler, where they lamented the impunity of herders whose cattle have destroyed crops worth millions of naira, including sweet potatoes, maize, and other staples.

“Before you stand men and women who are breadwinners in their respective homes. But our means of livelihood have been destroyed. Herders have grazed their cattle on our farmlands, leaving our crops in ruins,” one demonstrator declared during the appeal.

Reports indicate at least 39 farms have been affected in recent weeks, exacerbating food insecurity in the Moro’a community.

The unrest stems from longstanding tensions in Southern Kaduna, where climate pressures and land scarcity have fueled clashes between predominantly Christian farmers and Fulani herders.

Farmers accuse armed herders of not only grazing on active farmlands but also launching violent reprisals, including shootings, amid failed dialogues.

La’ah Philemon, National Leader of the Moro’a Youth Wing, warned of a “looming hunger” and called for a seasonal ban on open grazing to prevent further confrontations.

Local leaders, including the district head, have pledged to escalate the matter to state authorities and security agencies, echoing broader calls for ranching initiatives and conflict resolution mechanisms.
