Soldier Attached To Operation Safe Haven Shoots Police Constable Dead In Bauchi


A soldier attached to the Joint Military/Police Operation Safe Haven, responsible for maintaining peace in Plateau as well as parts of Bauchi and Kaduna States, has allegedly shot dead a police constable in Bauchi following a confrontation at a checkpoint.

According to reports, the unfortunate incident took place around 9 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Tudun Wadan Dan Iya, a popular area also known as Bayan Gari, located within the Bauchi metropolis.

A family member of the deceased, Rashida Muhammed, told Daily Trust that a police patrol team was stationed in the area, which is often used for social gatherings.

She narrated that the disagreement began when officers on patrol stopped vehicles and questioned motorcyclists during their routine checks.

According to her, one of the individuals reportedly refused to comply with the officers’ directives, leading to a brief altercation at the scene.

Rashida added that about an hour later, the soldier returned to the spot with two of his colleagues, and before anyone could intervene, the constable was shot in the chest.

She said residents immediately tried to flee the scene, but some members of the public managed to restrain one of the suspects before the arrival of police reinforcements, who later took control of the situation.

The Bauchi State Police Command has since confirmed the tragic development.

Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has appealed to officers for calm, assuring that a comprehensive and discreet investigation would be conducted to uncover the circumstances surrounding Constable Ukasha’s death.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, said that at about 10:35 p.m. on October 10, 2025, the Command received a report of a serious incident involving a patrol team led by Inspector Hussaini Samaila in the Bayan Gari area.

He explained that the team was attacked while on duty when one of its members, Constable Ukasha Muhammed (F/No. 533164), was assaulted by two individuals in front of Padimo Hotel, prompting the team to respond immediately.

Wakil identified one of the suspects as Private Usman Mubarak (23NA/84/5346), a soldier attached to the STF Operation Safe Haven in Jos, Plateau State.

He added that at about 11:05 p.m., two other soldiers, Private Yakubu Yahuza (23NA/85/10185) and Private Godspower Gabriel (23NA/84/5654), both armed and partially dressed in military uniform, returned to the scene and fatally shot Constable Ukasha in the left side of his chest before escaping.

Wakil noted that the victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, where he was confirmed dead upon arrival.

He added that the remains of the officer have been deposited in the hospital mortuary, while the detained soldiers, Private Yahuza and Private Gabriel, are currently in police custody.

According to the police, a homicide investigation team made up of seasoned detectives has been set up to ensure a professional, transparent, and thorough investigation aimed at establishing the facts and ensuring justice is served.

As of the time of filing this report, the military authorities had not released an official statement on the incident.
