Sokoto State Govt Launches Boat Operator Training to Curb Boat Mishap

The Sokoto State Government has launched a comprehensive training program for boat operators across the state.

The initiative, spearheaded by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), follows the government’s recent acquisition of 20-seater motorized fiber boats and 1,000 life jackets, aimed at bolstering safety measures in flood-prone areas.

The equipment was unveiled during a ceremony in Sokoto last week, inspected by Deputy Governor Alhaji Muhammad Idris Gobir, representing Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto.

The training program, which commenced shortly after, is designed to equip boat operators with essential technical knowledge, practical skills, and safety protocols, including the proper use of life-saving equipment.

Mustapha Umar, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at SEMA, who represented the Special Adviser on SEMA, Hon. Aminu Liman Bodinga, addressed participants at the training.

He announced that the official flag-off and distribution of the boats and life jackets would take place upon completion of the training.

“This program is critical to ensuring our operators are well-prepared to navigate safely and respond effectively during emergencies,” Umar stated.

The initiative targets 10 flood-prone local government areas, where local officials will oversee the deployment of the boats and life jackets.

Hon. Bodinga praised the state government’s efforts, describing the intervention as a timely response to recent boat mishaps that claimed several lives.

“This program reflects our commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Sokoto residents. It is a vital step toward strengthening our emergency response and reducing risks during floods,” he said.

The training and equipment distribution are part of broader efforts by the Sokoto State Government to prioritize citizen safety and enhance resilience in the face of recurring floods.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will prevent future tragedies and improve water transportation safety across the state.
