Sokoto Orders Immediate Suspension Of School Fees Across Public Secondary Schools

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ladan Ala, has directed principals of public secondary schools across the state to immediately suspend the collection of school fees.

The directive was issued on Wednesday,  following the constitution of a committee by the ministry to review complaints and concerns raised over fees charged in schools.

Prof. Ala stated that the suspension will remain in effect until the committee submits its recommendations.

Prof. Ala clarified that under no circumstances should principals demand payment for Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies, admission fees, testimonial fees, statements of results, or the Muslim Students Society (MSS) fee.

Other suspended charges include fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), including statements of results, certificates, answer sheets, and screening forms.

Fees for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and certificate fees for the National Examinations Council (NECO), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) are also suspended.

The commissioner emphasised that the suspension aims to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in public schools while protecting students and parents from arbitrary charges.

“This measure is to safeguard the interests of parents and students and to allow the committee adequate time to review all concerns thoroughly,” Prof. Ala added.

The Sokoto State Ministry of Education has urged all school administrators to comply fully with the directive and assured the public that appropriate steps will be taken against any violations.
