Social listening 28 February 2025: Stop harassing female senators

5 hours ago 47

Earlier today, I saw an unfortunate and disturbing incident online involving Senator Natasha Uduaghan-Akpoti, who represents Kogi Central, and Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate. In the Viral video, Akpabio unjustly ordered her to leave the Senate chamber. This egregious act of harassment is not an isolated incident but rather part of a troubling pattern of behaviour towards female senators under Akpabio’s leadership.

It is unacceptable and condemnable that, under the Senate President’s watch, female senators are treated as second-class representatives in a body meant to uphold the rights and dignity of all its members. The treatment endured by Senator Ireti Kingibe mirrors that experienced by Senator Akpoti recently. Such repeated harassment against female senators must no longer be tolerated.

One cannot help but question why Senator Akpabio consistently targets women while sparing his male counterparts from similar treatment. This glaring double standard undermines the integrity of the Senate and sends a disheartening message about women’s role in our political landscape. As elected representatives of their constituencies, women deserve the same respect and consideration as their male colleagues.

Senator Akpabio has no authority to dismiss Senator Natasha Akpoti from the chamber. As an elected representative of Kogi Central, she has every right to participate in Senate discussions and debates.

Akpabio entered the Senate as a representative, just as Akpoti holds her position. We must protect the rights and dignity of women in our political institutions.

We must advocate for a political environment where women are present and feel safe and respected. The harassment of female senators is a violation of their rights and an affront to the democratic principles we claim to uphold.

In light of this, I urge the Senate President to stop his harassment and targeting of our female senators.

Suppose this pattern of behaviour continues, and he does not end his campaign of harassment. In that case, we will have no choice but to petition various embassies to consider placing visa bans on him and his immediate family. It is time to hold those in power accountable for their actions and ensure that every senator’s dignity, regardless of gender, is respected.

We demand a Senate that is equitable and just for all its members.

Godswill Akpabio

Dr Ugo Egbujo wrote on Facebook:

I had a dream yesterday.

In the dream

Tinubu called a meeting of his economic kitchen cabinet.

He was the first to arrive.

He wore a hat on which was written Oil Minister.

You know how dreams are

He stood at the door, welcoming his team.

Yemi Cardoso CBN Gov came first.

Then Wale Edun, Finance Minister, arrived

Then Zach Adedeji, the FIRS chairman, arrived

Then Gboyega Oyetola, Blue Economy minister, came

Then Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Trade and Industry, arrived.

Next was Bosun Tijani, Minister of Digital Economy

Then, Bashir Adeniyi, the boss of Customs.

Then Gbajabiamila arrived, apologising.

As the meeting was about to start, Tinubu said he didn’t want to rebuild the economy without fighting corruption.

So, he whispered to Gbajabiamila.

Soon Egbetokun, the IGP arrived

Then Ola Olukoyede, the EFCC chairman, arrived

Then Adeola Ajayi, the DSS DG, arrived

Then Lateef Fagbemi, Attorney General, arrived

Gbajabiamia asked Tinubu if he could invite Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice.

Tinubu shook his head, saying he didn’t want it to look too Yoruba.

I jumped up from my bed.
