Liverpool manager Arne Slot has played down speculation linking the Reds with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, insisting the club will only move in the market if the “right player” is available for the “right price.”
Liverpool saw a reported £110 million bid for the Sweden international rejected earlier this month, with Newcastle holding out for a British-record £150 million fee. Isak has since fuelled speculation over his future by accusing Newcastle of breaking promises and declaring “a change is in the best interests of everyone.”
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s trip to St. James’ Park on Monday, Slot refused to be drawn into the transfer saga.
“I am happy with the squad, but if we think there is a player who can really make us better, then this club has always shown they can bring them in,” Slot said. “But it needs to be everything we want: the right transfer fee, the right position, and the player wants to come to us.”
The Dutchman, who has overseen a summer spending spree of more than £300 million offset by over £200 million in player sales, stressed he does not expect a frantic end to the window.
“I don’t think it will be a busy end to the summer transfer window,” he added. “Two players for each position is ideal, but sometimes less is more, so you are not disappointing players.”
Despite Isak’s absence from the Newcastle squad as he continues to train away from the group, Slot dismissed suggestions Liverpool could benefit from the ongoing turmoil.
