Singapore’s Former Transport Minister S. Iswaran To Complete Corruption Sentence Under House Arrest

2 weeks ago 13

Singapore’s former transport minister, S. Iswaran, who was jailed for obstructing justice and accepting over $300,000 in gifts, will serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest, the Singapore Prisons Service announced on Friday.

Iswaran, the first former cabinet minister to be imprisoned in Singapore, was sentenced to one year in jail following a high-profile trial that captured public attention in the city-state known for its strict anti-corruption stance.

According to the prisons service, Iswaran will complete the remaining eight months of his sentence at home under strict conditions, including curfew monitoring, counselling, and the use of an electronic tag. Officials determined he was eligible for home detention based on his low risk of reoffending, good conduct in prison, and strong family support.

“He has been assessed suitable for emplacement on the scheme, as he is of low risk of re-offending, did not commit any institutional offence in prison, and has strong family support,” Singapore Prisons Service said.

Under Singapore’s regulations, prisoners sentenced to more than four weeks can be considered for home detention after serving at least 14 days behind bars.

Iswaran, who served in the cabinet for 13 years and held key portfolios in trade, communications, and transport, pleaded guilty last year to four counts of improperly receiving gifts and one count of obstructing justice.
