Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is set to make his long-awaited return to action for Udinese next week in the Italian Serie A, following the completion of his suspension over a betting-related offence.
Okoye, who joined Udinese from Watford in 2023, was banned in late July after being found guilty of deliberately receiving a yellow card during a Serie A match against Lazio — an incident that was later tied to a betting irregularity investigated by Italian football authorities.
During his three-month absence, Udinese relied on veteran goalkeeper Daniele Padelli, who stepped up as temporary first choice.
Speaking on Udinese Tonight, a weekly football show on TV12, Padelli offered positive updates about Okoye’s form and attitude in training.
“Maduka is training really well, like someone who expects to play every weekend, maybe even better than before,” Padelli said. “The break allowed him to improve on a few areas of his game. He’s physically and mentally ready for his comeback. Now it’s up to the coach, but I can tell you he’s ready.”
Padelli, who humorously admitted that Okoye’s return could push him back down the pecking order, also praised the Nigerian shot-stopper’s professionalism and discipline throughout his suspension.
Okoye’s return comes at a crucial time for Udinese, who have struggled with defensive consistency this season. Fans and teammates are hopeful that his comeback will bring renewed stability and confidence to the squad as they push for better results in Serie A.
