Senate Moves to Adopt 112 as Nationwide Emergency Number

The Nigerian Senate has introduced a bill to establish 112 as the single, uniform emergency number that citizens can call or text for any type of emergency across the country.

Leading the debate, the bill’s sponsor, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, highlighted the current confusion caused by multiple emergency lines operated by different government agencies.

He described the fragmented system as a major obstacle to rapid response during critical situations.

Senator Yar’adua argued that 112 is simple, easy to remember, and quick to dial even on locked phones making it the ideal universal emergency code.

The proposed law aims to streamline communication with police, fire, medical, and other emergency services through one recognizable number.

The bill is now under consideration in the Senate.
