The Senate has urged the Federal Government to honour the memory of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, by naming a national monument after him.

The resolution was reached on Thursday during plenary, where lawmakers also decided to send a high-level delegation to extend condolences to his family, the people of Ijebuland, and the Ogun State Government.

During the session, senators paid heartfelt tributes to Chief Adebanjo, describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey, a fearless advocate for justice, and a dedicated champion of good governance.

The elder statesman passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of activism, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress.

Leading the motion, Senator Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East) expressed deep sorrow over Adebanjo’s passing while acknowledging his immense contributions to democracy and national unity.

Reflecting on his tenure as Afenifere’s leader, Daniel highlighted how Adebanjo consistently held those in power accountable—not out of defiance, but from a deep-seated commitment to justice and the welfare of Nigerians.

The Senator stated, “His principles and dedication to the truth earned him respect across political divides, making him not just an individual but an institution in his own right,” the senator stated.

He told the Senate that Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The Senate acknowledged that his demise is a significant loss, not only to the Yoruba people but to the entire country.
