Senate Backs Lalong’s Motion To Honour Late Useni

The Senate has unanimously endorsed the motion moved by Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District, to honor one of his predecessors, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Timbut Useni, who recently died at 82.

While moving the motion during plenary on Wednesday, Senator Lalong said during his many years of meritorious service in the Nigerian Army, JT Useni held various military and political appointments before his retirement: He was Director of Supply and Transport of the Nigerian Army, Director of Ordinance Services of the Nigerian Army, and Quarter Master General of the Nigerian Army.

Lalong also disclosed that the late Useni achieved so much during his lifetime with excellent records that remain a reference point.

“On the political scene, he was Chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (1977-1981), Military Governor of old Bendel State (Now Edo and Delta States) Jan 1984–Aug 1985; Minister of Transport and Aviation (1985–1988); Co-ordinator, movement of Defence Headquarters from Lagos to Abuja–1993, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from Dec 1993–Aug 1998. While in the FCT, he was appointed Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Forum and Leaders of Thought” he said.

He submitted the following prayers for the consideration of his colleagues:

i. Observe one minute silence in honour of late Senator (Gen.) Jeremiah Timbut Useni DSS, FSS, psc, mni, CFR, Sardaunan Plateau and Nassarawa States;
ii. Urge the Federal Government, especially the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to revive the name of Kado Housing Estate to Jeremiah Timbut Useni Housing Estate, as it was originally named; and
iii. Send an official delegation to condole with the family of late Senator (Gen.) Jeremiah Timbut Useni DSS, FSS, psc, mni, CFR, as well as the Government and people of Plateau State.

Various Senators took turns to eulogise the late Jeremiah Useni revealing their interactions with him and how he impacted them and many Nigerians respectively.

Among the Speakers were co-sponsor of the motion and Senator representing Plateau Central Diket Plang, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, Senator Abdul Ningi, Adams Oshiomole, Victor Umeh, Orji Uzor Kalu, Aliyu Wadada, Adamu Aliero, and Sani Musa among others.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also paid tribute to the late General describing him as humble, friendly and a patriotic Nigerian.

After adopting all the prayers advocated by Senator Lalong’s motion, the Senate observed a one minute silence for their late collague and expressed condolences to his family members who were given an opportunity to be in the Chambers to witness the session.
