Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady and former senator, is more than a political figurehead; she embodies the spirit of Sarauniyar Yaki, the ‘Queen Warrior’.
Known for her steady resolve and decades of dedicated public service, she has consistently championed causes ranging from education to women’s empowerment. Now as First Lady, she brings a legacy of quiet strength and purposeful leadership to a role that demands both grace and grit.
During a recent two-day working visit to Gombe State, Senator Tinubu was honoured with the traditional title of Sarauniyar Yaki, the Queen Warrior of the Akko Emirate. The title was conferred on her by the Lamido of Akko, Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku, in recognition of her unwavering advocacy for the vulnerable, particularly women and girls across the nation.
Accepting the honour, the First Lady expressed gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to improving the lives of girls and young women in Nigeria. She also appealed to traditional rulers in Gombe and other parts of the country to support her advocacy work, especially in areas of girl-child education, health, and empowerment.
As part of her ongoing initiatives, the First Lady is set to launch the national rollout of the Renewed Hope Initiative: Flow With Confidence, a major menstrual health intervention aimed at addressing period poverty among schoolgirls. The programme will distribute 370,000 sanitary pads worth ₦2.55 billion to schoolgirls across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The intervention is designed to ensure that menstruation does not hinder girls’ access to education, while also promoting hygiene awareness and breaking social taboos around menstrual health.
With her new traditional title and a bold health initiative on the horizon, Oluremi Tinubu continues to demonstrate that true leadership lies not just in holding office, but in using it to protect, empower, and uplift others; just as a Queen Warrior should.
