Salah’s late penalty secures Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Burnley

Liverpool came from a frustrating afternoon to snatch a stoppage-time 1-0 victory at Burnley on Sunday.

It was Mo Salah who converted a 90+5 penalty after Hannibal Mejbri’s last-gasp handball to give the visitors a fourth win from four this season.

Liverpool dominated possession for large spells and probed patiently, but a superbly organised Burnley defence kept them at bay for most of the match.

Burnley’s keeper Martin Dúbravka was rarely troubled in the first half but produced a crucial late save to keep the score level as Liverpool turned the pressure up after the break.

The game turned in Liverpool’s favour when Burnley were reduced to ten men in the 84th minute.

Lesley Ugochukwu, already booked, was sent off for a second yellow following a foul on Florian Wirtz.

Even so, Burnley held firm until deep into added time when Jeremie Frimpong’s cross struck Mejbri’s arm and referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot.

Salah stepped up and stroked home the penalty to break Burnley’s hearts and complete another dramatic late winner for Liverpool, whose decisive goals this season have arrived in the closing stages.

The result extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run after four games.

Burnley, who defended valiantly behind a packed backline, suffered another crushing defeat, their third in four matches.

With this win, Liverpool stay top of the table with 12 points, with Arsenal trailing at 9 points.
