Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has reaffirmed his strong connection to his Nigerian heritage, describing it as a core part of his identity and values.

Although born and raised in England, the 24-year-old has consistently highlighted the influence of his parents, who both grew up in Nigeria.

Saka’s international career once sparked a tug-of-war between England and Nigeria, but the winger eventually committed to the Three Lions after featuring for the country at various youth levels.

Family influence and cultural pride

Speaking in a recent BBC interview, Saka said: “My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it, my Nigerian roots. Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.”

Those values, he explained, shape his discipline, work ethic and character on and off the pitch.

Charity work in Nigeria

Saka has demonstrated his bond with Nigeria through philanthropy, partnering with children’s charity BigShoe to fund 120 life-changing surgeries in Kano.

The initiative covered procedures such as inguinal and umbilical hernia repairs and the removal of brain tumours for underprivileged children.

His deep cultural ties were further highlighted in June 2023 when Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted him at the State House in Marina.
