The District Governor of Rotary Club Nigeria, Dr. Princess Joy Nky Okoro, has commissioned the renovation of the library at Kawo Model Nursery and Primary School, Kaduna, and the establishment of a reading club to promote literacy among pupils.
Speaking at the event held at the school premises in Kaduna North Local Government Area, Dr. Okoro appealed to government to provide solar power for the renovated facility to ensure a conducive learning environment.
She commended the Kaduna chapter of the Rotary Club for embarking on projects that enhance education, describing the initiative as a practical way of supporting communities.
The President of the Kaduna State chapter of Rotary Club, Ahmad Tijjani, said the decision to renovate the school library was taken after consultations with the school authorities revealed the need for urgent intervention.
“We renovated the school library, provided 1,000 reading books, and created a reading club to inculcate the habit of reading among the pupils,” he said.
Tijjani added that September, being Rotary’s month of basic education and literacy, would feature a quiz competition involving 15 schools to further encourage learning. He said the club also renovated the school toilets under its water and sanitation programme.
He urged government at all levels to prioritise basic education, stressing that no meaningful development could be achieved without it.
The District Head of Kawo, Alhaji Jibril Mohammed Magaji, represented by Marafan Kawo, Ibrahim Ya’u Na’aye, commended the Rotary Club for the project, describing it as a huge contribution to the community.
Also, the Head Teacher of the school, Mr. Falalu Sa’ad, represented by his assistant, Mrs. Lubabatu Mohammed, expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club, assuring that the school would ensure proper maintenance of the facility.
