Wayne Rooney has confessed that he initially doubted Manchester United’s decision to sign Bryan Mbeumo but now admits the forward has exceeded expectations with his early-season performances.
Mbeumo scored his second Premier League goal for United in Sunday’s hard-fought win over Liverpool at Anfield, a result that gave the Red Devils consecutive league victories for the first time under Ruben Amorim.
Mbeumo silences his critics
After a prolific 2024/25 campaign with Brentford, where he scored 20 goals in 38 league games, Mbeumo completed a £71 million move to Old Trafford last summer.
The hefty price tag drew mixed reactions, including scepticism from club legend Rooney.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former United striker said: “I’ll be honest, I was a bit sceptical when Manchester United signed him.
“I didn’t know if he had the ability to come and play for Manchester United, but he’s proved me wrong. He’s been United’s standout player this season.”
The 26-year-old has started all eight league matches so far, scoring against Burnley and Liverpool while also registering an assist in the win over Sunderland.
Rooney hails Maguire
Rooney also praised Harry Maguire for his determination after enduring years of ridicule from fans and media.
“He was mocked for years, but to see him come through all that shows how strong-minded he is. Taking the criticism, losing the armband, and still performing at this level, it’s admirable,” Rooney noted.
Maguire’s winning header at Anfield secured a crucial three points for United, boosting morale within the camp.
Amorim targets consistency
Manager Ruben Amorim described the victory as a statement of intent and urged his players to stay consistent.
“It’s really important, back-to-back wins show progress. The spirit, control, and details were all perfect today. Now we must keep that level,” he said.
Manchester United will look to extend their form when they host Brighton at Old Trafford on October 25.
