Aaron Ramsdale

Romano’s update on Arsenal goalkeeper

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is expected to leave the club in this summer’s transfer window even if a replacement has not yet been decided, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Ramsdale could be an exciting opportunity available on the market for some clubs this summer, but it seems the England international’s future has not yet been fully settled, even if staying at the Emirates Stadium seems all but impossible for him at this stage.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest column for the Daily Briefing, Romano attempted to clear up the situation on Ramsdale, whilst insisting that nothing concrete was happening yet with Arsenal’s plans to bring in a replacement backup goalkeeper despite links with Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow.

Bijlow has impressed in his time in the Eredivisie and could be a good alternative to David Raya if Mikel Arteta ever finds he needs to rotate his ‘keepers or if the Spanish shot-stopper gets injured, but it seems fans will have to wait a bit longer for clarity on this.

For the time being, sorting out Ramsdale’s future will seemingly have to happen first before we know more about who the north London giants could target to replace him.

Ramsdale transfer likely, says Romano

“There are also some player exits to clarify at Arsenal this summer, with the goalkeeper situation one to watch as they want to find a solution for Aaron Ramsdale. Although there have been replacements like Justin Bijlow linked with the Gunners by some sources, my understanding is that no decision has been made on this yet,” Romano said.

“Ramsdale is expected to leave for sure, but there’s nothing advanced with any club yet, so it’s not clear yet how much Arsenal will get for him. Before having a replacement lined up to serve as the backup to David Raya, they want to make sure that they find the best solution possible for Ramsdale.”

Raya replaced Ramsdale as Arsenal’s first choice in the season just gone and although that might have looked a bit of a risk at first, few will be arguing with the decision now.
