Rivers State Police Achieve Major Breakthrough In Crime Reduction


The Rivers State Police Command has recorded significant progress in its fight against crime, with recent operations yielding substantial results across the state.

During a press briefing on Thursday at the command, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, revealed that between January and August 2025, the command recovered an extensive arsenal, including 21 AK-47 rifles, 66 locally made guns, and 8,000 rounds of ammunition.

Displaying the recovered items at the briefing, CP Adepoju also reported the recovery of 115 vehicles, among which were 19 stolen vehicles linked to a notorious car-snatching syndicate.

“In the past months, the Rivers State Police Command, working in close synergy with the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), DSS, and other key security stakeholders, has made remarkable progress in our sustained operations to curb criminal activities across the state,” Adepoju said.

He added, “Through this united effort, we have intensified our crackdown on violent crimes, leading to the arrest of numerous suspects involved in heinous offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, human trafficking, and murder, as well as the recovery of vital exhibits.”

In one notable operation, the police arrested 12 suspects accused of vandalizing an oil-spilled well in Kpean community. The suspects were found in possession of three GXI Dynatrac con units and three suspected explosives.

CP Adepoju also led another critical operation that resulted in the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the murder of Barrister Bright Owhor. Recovered items included one MTN SIM card, four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, a minibus, and a Toyota Camry.

Furthermore, the police successfully dismantled an interstate car-snatching syndicate, arresting 11 suspects and recovering 19 stolen vehicles.

In addition, two notorious cultists were apprehended with one AK-47 rifle and two magazines containing 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

Another operation led to the arrest of a suspect involved in sea piracy and threats of violence at Eresekiri fishing port, Abonnema. Items recovered included one LAR rifle, 19 rounds of live ammunition, a pump-action gun with one live cartridge, and a wrap of dynamite.

CP Adepoju reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens and residents, urging the public to cooperate by providing credible information that can help safeguard the community.

With the upcoming local government elections, authorities assured residents of comprehensive security measures, including the deployment of sufficient personnel across the state to guarantee safety during the polls.
