The Human Rights Alliance of Nigeria (HRAN) has called on former Kaduna state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, to honour the invitation extended to him by the Kaduna state Police command.
El-Rufai was summoned alongside six top members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over alleged conspiracy, incitement, mischief, and disturbance of public peace in the state.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Abraham Tar, the group expressed concern that instead of appearing before the police, the former governor petitioned the Police Service Commission (PSC) against the state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, accusing him of unprofessional conduct and abuse of office.
HRAN described the action as a disregard for constituted authority and unbecoming of a public figure of El-Rufai’s stature.
“We are saddened that instead of honouring the invitation, he decided to petition the Police Service Commission, an act that undermines the principles of accountability and respect for the law,” it said.
The group noted that other former governors, including Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto state, and Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti ztate, had in the past honoured police invitations without hesitation.
“Since others before him have submitted themselves to investigation when invited, there is no reason why El-Rufai should act differently,” it said.
The group however, urged political leaders across the country to set good examples by respecting democratic institutions and processes.
