Reps to Probe Consultants for Negligence, Side Jobs in Federal Hospitals

The House of Representatives on Thursday launched an investigation into allegations of medical negligence, professional misconduct, and staff moonlighting at the National Hospital Abuja and other federal teaching hospitals nationwide.

The probe follows a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, who decried falling healthcare standards and eroding public trust in Nigeria’s flagship tertiary institutions.

Onuakalusi highlighted systemic failures at the National Hospital established in 1999 as the nation’s apex referral center citing workforce decline from 3,000 to 2,500 due to brain drain and low morale, severely impacting patient care.

He accused consultants and doctors of abandoning official duties to work in private clinics during work hours, leading to poor supervision, patient neglect, and preventable deaths.

A 10-year autopsy review at the hospital revealed only an 11% rate, with haemorrhage, cardiac shock, and coma as top causes, signaling weak monitoring, he said.

Despite generating over ₦400 million monthly, patient care quality remains poor amid rising negligence complaints, Onuakalusi added.

The House adopted the motion and mandated an ad-hoc committee to:

Conduct a nationwide audit of consultants and doctors in federal teaching hospitals

Verify employment records and private practice during official hours

Review doctor-patient ratios and attendance logs.

Assess mortality rates tied to consultant lapses.

Examine financial and administrative management.

The committee will collaborate with the NMA, MDCAN, and MDCN to root out quackery and restore professionalism. It must report back within four weeks for further action.
