Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, successfully mediated a resolution on Thursday, ending the ongoing dispute between the Federal Government and indigenous contractors in Nigeria.
The resolution followed Kalu’s appointment as Chairman of the House Special Committee on Budget Implementation by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.
Kalu convened a marathon meeting lasting over four hours in Abuja, attended by over 80 contractors and their leadership, alongside key government officials, including the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Shamseldeen Ogunjimi.
The open dialogue addressed longstanding issues, resulting in a mutually beneficial agreement that averted further disruptions to the economy.
Speaking after the meeting, Kalu expressed gratitude to the Speaker and his colleagues for entrusting him with the responsibility.
He highlighted the collaborative efforts, stating, “We met with the Finance Minister, Minister of Budget and Planning, Accountant-General, and representatives from all caucuses of the House. We saw the protest and invited the contractors for a conversation. I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing these diligent officials who handled this matter with humility.”
Kalu noted that payments to contractors would commence on Monday, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for September 21 to review progress.
Finance Minister Wale Edun praised Kalu’s leadership, affirming that a clear timeline and systematic process for clearing payment backlogs were established.
“Under Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s leadership, we mapped out a way forward. The Accountant-General made commitments, and after Friday’s holiday, payments will start dropping from Monday,” Edun said, emphasizing the orderly procedure for addressing approved contractor payments.
The resolution was hailed by all parties as a testament to the power of dialogue, ensuring economic stability and reinforcing trust in the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations to contractors.
