Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has clarified that he will contest the 2027 presidential election.
He dismissed reports suggesting that he is no longer interested in leading the country.
Atiku made the clarification from his holiday home in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following media reports quoting a representative at a Lagos event as saying he was “not desperate” to be president.
Speaking on Monday, one of his close associates and former presidential campaign spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, confirmed that the statement attributed to Atiku was false.
Olusunle said: “I did not issue that statement. When people stand in for me at events, we preview my thoughts on the instant subject and what my contribution or intervention will be, so we are on the same page.
“In this particular instance, there was no engagement with me to distill my thoughts. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me.”
He stressed that the former Vice President remains committed to his political ambition and the rescue of Nigeria.
“Atiku has asked me to make it clear that he will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned.
“The degeneration in our country, the level of poverty and pain, the anguish, is unacceptable,” Olusunle added.
Atiku, who has contested multiple times for the presidency, insists that his decision to run again stems from a desire to rebuild the country.
“I will run in 2027. Nigeria must not continue in its current state,” he said.
