Removal Of Maths As An Admission Requirement For Arts, Humanities Will Reduce Malpractices  -Oloyede

Professor Ishaq Oloyed, the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB), has stated that the federal government’s decision to eliminate Mathematics as a requirement for students wanting to study courses in arts and humanities at higher institutions was intended to reduce forgeries.

Oloyede spoke at the ceremony announcing the Jihad Week programme and Ad-dhikr Magazine inauguration at the University of Ibadan (UI),on Sunday.

According to the JAMB Registrar, the policy has been in existence for a while, but it hasn’t been applied, saying the Ministry of Education has aligned the policy with the reality on the ground to prevent forgery.

“How would you say that someone who wants to study Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or Arabic should not be admitted to university because they do not have Mathematics? If they wanted to study Yoruba without Mathematics, they could go to London University.

“What the Ministry of Education is doing is realigning the policy with the reality on the ground, and it is in our interest not to encourage forgeries, the JAMB Registrar said.

Oloyede, a guest lecturer who spoke on the event’s theme of ‘The Paragon’, said that a paragon is someone to be emulated, just as he urged all Muslims to strive to be a paragon and a role model wherever they are.

He said that as a Muslim mass movement organization, the MSSN must ensure that all Muslims come together without discrimination and propagate Islam not only through preaching but also through their conduct.

MSSN has the capacity to invite people to see the beauty of Islam, and the current MSSN must continue to do that by building genuine and sincere relationships among one another, as stated by the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin.

The Chairman of the event, Idris Adeoye, praised the founders of MSSN for nurturing and leading Muslim students, inspiring them to be complete Muslims and ambassadors of Islam.

Adeoye urged Nigerian young people to have faith in the country and steer clear of actions that could harm their future.

Umar Faruq, the Ameer of MSSN at the University of Ibadan, expressed concern that many abnormalities in society were perceived as normal and those attempting to rectify them were considered wicked.

Faruq urged Muslims, particularly the youth, to abstain from internet fraud, alcohol consumption, and other actions that violate God and the Quran.

As Muslims, we must stand tall and be role models in our academic, spiritual, and mental lives.

In addition, the Vice President of Muslim Ummah, South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), Alhaji Rafiu Ebiti, stated that the MSSN is essential not only for Islam but also for the educational development of Nigeria.

Ebiti stated that society is changing and MSSN must adapt positively by bringing more Muslims on board without discrimination.

MSSN, a large Islamic student organization, was established in 1954 with the objective of promoting Islamic education, unity, and welfare among Muslim students throughout Nigeria.

The major student organization engages in sociocultural, educational, and religious activities, which include vocational training, leadership programs, and inter-school competitions.
