Remains of veteran journalist Aliyu Getso laid to rest in Kano – Daily Trust


Hundreds of people from Kano and other neighbouring states attended the funeral prayer of a veteran journalist and labour activist, Malam Aliyu Abubakar Getso, who passed away in the early hours of Sunday in Kano State.

The funeral prayer led by the Imam of Jan-bulo Second gate along BUK road, in Kano metropolis, Malam Mukhtar Shu’aibu Labaran, was held at 9:39 am.

Late Aliyu Abubakar Getso died at the age of 69, after a protracted illness.

Getso was a former Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano Council and a former Assistant Secretary, Nigeria Labour Congress, Kano State chapter.

He was a familiar and respected voice in northern Nigeria’s media landscape.

In the course of his career, he worked with the Kano State Ministry of Information and several prominent radio stations including Kano State Radio Corporation, Freedom Radio, Vision FM and Premier Radio, where he earned recognition for his eloquence, professionalism and dedication to public service broadcasting.

He was especially celebrated for his deep analysis of domestic and foreign issues in the news, providing insights and aiding comprehension for the audience.

Late Getso was a news editor, translator and news presenter, among others.

He left behind 3 wives, children and grandchildren.

Among those who attended the funeral prayer were former Chairman of NUJ, Kano Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim; a former BBC staff and former lecturer at the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, Dr Maude Rabi’u Gwadabe; Dala FM Station Manager Alhaji Ahmad Garzali Yakubu, and others.
