Reds humbled at home in horror Champions League show

Liverpool’s alarming collapse continued on Wednesday night as PSV ripped through Arne Slot’s side at Anfield, condemning the Reds to a damaging 4-1 Champions League defeat.

The result extends Liverpool’s worst run of form since 1953, with nine losses in their last 12 outings across all competitions.

Slot entered the fixture under growing pressure after back-to-back domestic defeats by a three-goal margin, but the Champions League had offered temporary relief.

That veneer of stability evaporated as PSV exposed Liverpool’s shortcomings with ruthless efficiency.

Early errors set the tone

The visitors opened the scoring inside six minutes, capitalising on a moment of poor judgement from Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender’s raised arm gifted PSV a penalty, which Ivan Perisic converted with ease.

Liverpool responded quickly through Dominic Szoboszlai, who tapped in after Cody Gakpo’s effort was pushed into his path by goalkeeper Matej Kovár.

That equaliser briefly sparked the Reds into life, with Gakpo threatening again and van Dijk heading against the bar.

PSV regain control

PSV re-established their lead when Mauro Junior carved Liverpool open with a defence-splitting pass, allowing Guus Til to slot home unchallenged.

From that point on, the visitors dictated proceedings as Liverpool’s structure fell apart.

The second half brought further misery for the hosts. Substitute Couhaib Driouech reacted quickest to finish from a Ricardo Pepi rebound, sending the travelling fans into full celebration mode.

The Moroccan forward then sealed a brace deep into stoppage time, finishing low into the corner after another sweeping PSV move.

Anfield stunned as pressure mounts

The defeat marks PSV’s first victory over an English side since their 2008 win against Tottenham and lifts them to 15th in the league-phase standings.

Liverpool, meanwhile, slip to 13th and look increasingly fragile in their pursuit of a top-eight finish..
