RB Leipzig step up talks to re-sign Nkunku from Chelsea

Christopher Nkunku’s Chelsea future remains bleak, with RB Leipzig now making efforts to bring the forward back to the Bundesliga, according to David Ornstein.

Nkunku, 27, has struggled for a starting role at Stamford Bridge since joining two years ago and is now keen on a permanent exit this summer.

While Bayern Munich have held discussions with Chelsea in recent days, progress has stalled as the German champions favour an initial loan move, while both Nkunku and Chelsea prefer a permanent transfer.

The Frenchman had already agreed personal terms with Bayern in January, but a deal collapsed after the Bavarians baulked at Chelsea’s valuation.

That impasse has allowed Leipzig, where Nkunku spent four prolific seasons before moving to London, to step into negotiations.

His name first surfaced during talks between Leipzig and Chelsea over Xavi Simons, and the Bundesliga side are now seriously pursuing a reunion.

Chelsea, meanwhile, must resolve Nkunku’s future if they are to move forward in their own push for Simons.

Nkunku is said to be open to returning to Leipzig despite the club missing out on European competition this season.
