The House of Representatives has clarified that proposals for the creation of 31 new states are not a resolution of parliament, but rather submissions that will undergo thorough legislative scrutiny.
According to Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House of Representatives, reports suggesting that the house is seeking to create new states are inaccurate.
“This information is inaccurate and misrepresents the legislative process,” Rotimi said on Friday during plenary.
Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, had earlier announced that the lower legislative chamber had received proposals for the creation of 31 new states.

However, Rotimi emphasized that these proposals will be carefully examined, including “public hearings, stakeholder engagements, and multiple levels of approval, before any constitutional changes” can be made.
Rotimi assured that the committee will align with constitutional provisions and only consider proposals that comply with the stipulated guidelines on state creation.
The House, he said, remains committed to a transparent and inclusive constitutional review process that reflects the will of Nigerians.
