President Tinubu Sends Legal Practitioners Bill to NASS for Major Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Legal Practitioners Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2025 to the National Assembly, marking the most comprehensive overhaul of legal practice regulation in decades.

The bill seeks to strengthen ethical standards, enforce accountability among practitioners, and significantly improve access to justice for Nigerians.

Reading the President’s executive communication on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio highlighted key provisions of the proposed legislation:

Mandatory licensing of all legal practitioners

Introduction of a compulsory two-year tutelage/apprenticeship programme for new lawyers

Establishment of continuous professional development as a requirement for annual practice renewal

President Tinubu stated that the reforms are designed to restore public confidence in the legal profession and align Nigeria’s legal practice with global best standards.

In a related development, the Senate observed a minute’s silence and adjourned plenary as a mark of respect for the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North), who passed away last Tuesday.

Lawmakers described him as a dedicated public servant and consummate legislator. Plenary resumes on Wednesday.
