French President Emmanuel Macron has said that a knife attack that killed one person and injured three others in eastern France on Saturday was an act of Islamist terrorism.
This comes after the French anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office confirmed that it was investigating the case.
In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said a man attacked local police officers in the city of Mulhouse, shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) on Saturday afternoon.
The statement added that a passer-by was killed while trying to intervene, while three police officers were injured in the process.
“It is without any doubt an act of Islamist terrorism,” Macron told reporters on the sidelines of the annual French farm show, adding that the interior minister was on his way to Mulhouse.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspect has been arrested.
