Chelsea’s Premier League trip to the south coast was a flat affair that produced more concern than excitement.
Liam Delap was forced off after appearing to dislocate his shoulder while wrestling with Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi at a corner.
The striker was replaced by Marc Guiu after several bruising duels with the Bournemouth defender. Senesi later left the pitch himself after overstretching for the ball in the second half.
Bournemouth thought they had struck early when Antoine Semenyo finished from close range after Evanilson’s effort was blocked. The celebration did not last long, as VAR ruled that Evanilson had strayed just offside during the build-up.
Semenyo remained Bournemouth’s brightest star, testing Robert Sanchez with a long-range hit and almost creating a simple chance for Evanilson.
Chelsea gradually found rhythm after the break and Alejandro Garnacho was unlucky when his header clipped the post. A string of efforts from a distance followed, but former Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic was rarely troubled.
Bournemouth held on comfortably without offering much threat of their own, apart from a late burst from Semenyo. The draw leaves Iraola’s side without a win in six Premier League games and Chelsea without a victory in three matches, cooling talk of a title push.
Manchester City Continue to Push For The Premier League Title
Manchester City made sure they did not waste the opportunity handed to them when Arsenal lost late on against Aston Villa. Pep Guardiola’s side brushed past Sunderland at the Etihad to move within two points of the league leaders.
Sunderland defended deep with a five-man line during the early stages and City struggled until Ruben Dias strode forward and unleashed a fierce effort from distance. His strike caught a slight touch off Dan Ballard and swerved into the top corner.
Four minutes later, Josko Gvardiol climbed highest to meet Phil Foden’s corner with a powerful header, and City were cruising before the interval.
City pushed for more after the restart. Jeremy Doku curled a low effort against the post from the edge of the box, while Erling Haaland saw a hooked effort cleared off the line.
Rayan Cherki’s clever assist allowed Foden to head in a third goal late on. Sunderland were more adventurous in the second half and came close when Wilson Isidor was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma and Granit Xhaka struck the post with a low drive.
The evening finished badly for the visitors when Luke O’Nien was sent off in added time for a studs-up challenge on Matheus Nunes after the referee upgraded a yellow card on review.
Tottenham eased some of the strain around Thomas Frank by beating his former club, Brentford, 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Summer signing Xavi Simons was at the heart of the performance and set up Richarlison for a simple opener. He then scored his first goal for the club after racing from inside his own half before finishing calmly. Brentford were unable to apply pressure after the break and Spurs closed out a win that should lift confidence within the squad.
Everton continued their impressive progress under David Moyes with a comfortable 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park, moving into fifth place.
Summer signing Thierno Barry scored his first goal for the club after a 16-match wait, finishing a quick counter-attack led by Iliman Ndiaye just before the break.
Everton were already ahead after only two minutes when a cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall deflected off Nikola Milenkovic and rolled into the net. Dewsbury-Hall later hit the post before driving in a third goal to seal the result.
Nottingham Forest struggled to create chances and relied on a rare opening for Nicolas Dominguez, whose effort was cleared off the line by James Tarkowski.
Newcastle edge Burnley at St. James’ Park
Newcastle United held on for a 2-1 win over struggling Burnley at St. James’ Park.
Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring with a composed finish after 31 minutes before Burnley’s night unravelled when they were reduced to ten men for serious foul play shortly before half-time.
Newcastle doubled their lead deep into added time, with Anthony Gordon scoring from the penalty spot.
Burnley battled well after the break and earned a late lifeline when VAR awarded a penalty for handball, converted by Zian Flemming. Newcastle claimed a vital three points, while Burnley’s relegation fears deepened with a sixth straight defeat.
