Pregnant Widow Expelled From Ugbema Community In Benue Over Alleged Shoplifting

Tension has reportedly gripped the Ugbema community in Benue State after local elders allegedly ordered the expulsion of a heavily pregnant widow accused of shoplifting.

According to Daily Post community sources reported that the woman, who recently lost her husband, had been taking small household items from local shops in a desperate effort to provide for herself, her young child, and her unborn baby.

Witnesses recounted that her ordeal began on Saturday morning when some youths caught her in the act and subjected her to public humiliation under the scorching sun.

A resident who witnessed the incident explained that the woman acted out of hunger and desperation, not malice. “Instead of humiliating her, the community should have shown compassion and offered assistance,” the resident added.

It was further gathered that following the incident, the community elders instructed the youths to escort the woman out of Ugbema as punishment for her alleged actions.

The decision has since sparked widespread outrage among residents and human rights advocates, who have condemned the act as cruel and unjust.

Many described the treatment meted out to the widow as “inhumane,” arguing that she needed help and compassion rather than punishment. They highlighted her situation as a clear reflection of the growing poverty and lack of social welfare in the area.

Meanwhile, calls are mounting for urgent intervention from local authorities and social welfare agencies to ensure the woman receives adequate care, protection, and justice.
