Hamzat Lawal, a prominent anti-corruption activist and Executive Director of Connected Development (CODE), has called on political office holders in Nigeria seeking higher salaries to resign and pursue opportunities in the private sector.
The statement comes amid growing debates over the remuneration of public officials in the face of economic challenges affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Lawal argued that public service should be driven by a commitment to serve, not financial gain.
“If any political office holder feels their salary is not enough, they should honourably resign and join the private sector where they can earn more,” Lawal said.
He emphasized that political positions are meant for those willing to make sacrifices for the public good, not for personal enrichment.
Lawal’s remarks follow recent discussions around the welfare of public officials, with some lawmakers and appointees reportedly pushing for salary increments amid rising inflation and economic hardship.
He criticized such moves, pointing out that many Nigerians struggle to afford basic necessities, while public officials enjoy significant perks, including allowances and official vehicles.
The activist urged the government to prioritize transparency and accountability in public spending, calling for a review of the current remuneration structure for political office holders.
“The focus should be on delivering good governance and improving the lives of citizens, not increasing salaries for those already privileged,” he added.
Lawal also called on citizens to hold leaders accountable and demand efficient use of public resources.
He advocated for stronger civic engagement to ensure policies reflect the needs of the masses rather than the elite.
The statement has sparked reactions across social media, with many Nigerians expressing support for Lawal’s stance, while others argue that fair compensation for public officials is necessary to deter corruption.
