A policeman, Obot Godwin, was shot to death by armed men in Bayelsa State after robbing him of his mobile phone on Tuesday.
He was shot around the Amarata area of Yenogoa, the state capital, while he was reportedly said to have gone to buy drugs.
He was shot in the head by the gunmen while pleading with them to spare his life, according to reports.
The police have carried out indiscriminate arrests in the area, including the destruction of houses and the tear-gassing of school children, causing residents to flee.
Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday, 23 August 2025, as he said that some people have been arrested over the incident.
“It is correct. Arrests have been made, “He said.
A source who preferred anonymity said that the tension in the area is very high as police operatives have been arresting people indiscriminately over Godwin’s death.
He said, “Windows were smashed during the police raid, and the community has been left in fear of further violence.
“Every time, we continue to run. This morning, we started running again. They just killed somebody,” another source said, adding that the area is noted for clashes between rival cult groups”.
The incident is coming about four months when gunmen suspected to be militants killed an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state.
