Policeman, 2 Kidnappers Killed In Failed Attack On FCT Community

A police officer and two suspected kidnappers died in a fierce gun battle in Guto village, a border community in the Bwari Area Council of the FCT.

The FCT Police Commissioner, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, who disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday at the command headquarters in Abuja, said the incident happened on Wednesday after some kidnappers, numbering 30 and armed with sophisticated weapons, attempted to abduct some members of a family at the community.

He said the Bwari Division’s Surveillance Team and the IGP Special Intervention Squad (SIS), upon receiving the distress call around 1:10 am, swiftly moved to the community and engaged the kidnappers, thereby foiling the abduction.

According to him, upon sighting the responding police teams, the attackers, who had already attempted to forcefully enter the targeted residence, opened fire.

“The gallant officers engaged the assailants with precision and superior firepower, resulting in a fierce gun duel, in which two of the criminals were neutralized, while the remaining fled into the surrounding bushes and mountainous terrain,” he said.

He added, “But tragically, one police officer sustained a fatal gunshot injury during the exchange and was rushed to Bwari General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner, even as the command deeply regrets the loss,” the CP said.

The Police Commissioner, while commending the exceptional gallantry, swift response, and professionalism displayed by the operatives during the operation, extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen officer.

CP Dantawaye described the deceased officer as a courageous hero who paid the supreme price in the line of duty, while assuring that the command will continue to intensify operations to rid the FCT of criminal elements.

He also appreciated the vigilance of Guto residents and urges all FCT communities to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious movements or emergencies through the command’s emergency lines: 08032003913, 08068587311.
