The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed reports of an alleged herdsmen invasion in the state, describing claims of attacks on communities as false.
The clarification follows a viral video circulating on social media, which purported to show Fulani herders attacking an unspecified location, allegedly repelled by some Ijaw youths. Authorities have confirmed the footage was misleading.
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, issued a statement from Port Harcourt on Wednesday, emphasising that the video was created by mischief-makers intending to cause panic and destabilize the state.
She urged residents to disregard the viral content, warning against sharing unverified videos that could portray the state negatively or incite fear among the public.
“The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media, falsely claiming Fulani herdsmen attacks in Rivers State,” the statement read. “These claims are entirely false, misleading, and designed to incite panic among the public.”
Irinje-Koko highlighted that the command, working alongside other security agencies, remains committed to protecting lives and property, preventing crime, and maintaining peace across Rivers State.
She added that robust security measures are already in place, including operational patrol teams, surveillance units, and tactical squads, under the leadership of CP Olugbenga Adepoju.
The police command called on the public to remain calm, exercise vigilance, and verify information through official channels before sharing, reiterating that no incidents of herdsmen attacks have occurred in any part of Rivers State.
