Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered an AK – 47 rifle wrapped in cult regalia within an uncompleted building behind The Heritage Polytechnic, Ikot Udoata, Eket Local Government Area of the State.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO) for Akwa Ibom DSP Timfon John and made available to Journalists in Uyo, stated that nobody was arrested at scene where the gun was recovered.
However, details surrounding ownership and why the gun was abandoned in the building is unknown.
According to the PPRO the AK 47 was recovered on a tip of as tge police acted on credible intelligence in their ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
The statement reads in parts:
“acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Command conducted a search operation at an uncompleted building behind Heritage Polytechnic, Ikot Udota, Eket.
“During the operation, one AK-47 rifle along with an empty magazine, was discovered concealed in black cult regalia.
“The rifle is suspected to have been hidden by criminal elements, likely in preparation for illegal activities. However, the swift intervention of the Command has thwarted any such plans”.
She said, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, under the proactive leadership of CP Baba Mohammed Azare remained committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents adding that, efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for concealing the firearm.
The CP, has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station noting that, such collaboration is the only way we can keep Akwa Ibom safer.
In another development, four suspects have been charged to court for blocking the highways.
The PPRO confirmed this to newsmen saying, the action is in line with directive of the police command, which had earlier warned youths in oil bearing communities to refrain from such habit.
The incident took place on Monday February 10, 2025 at about 2100hrs when a truck driver, attached to Sterling Global Construction Company recklessly hit a tricycle rider conveying passengers.
The accident caused damage to the tricycle while passers sustained injuries thereby making four other truck drivers to deliberately blocked the road in an attempt to prevent the former from fleeing.
