The Nigerian Police, Enugu state command, has debunked a viral video portraying the police as assaulting a 5-year- old boy in Enugu.
Piqued by the touching video, the police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, acknowledged that the incident took place but that it happened five years ago and it is being circulated as if it is a recent occurrence.
Ndukwe pointed out that the personnel involved in the incident then had been sanctioned in accordance with police disciplinary procedure and wondered why the issue should be raked up as if it is new.
He clarifies thus: “The Enugu state police command urges the public to disregard viral video depicting policemen assaulting a young man in Enugu for refusing to allow a phone search.
“A thorough review of the video, which is currently re circulated by one “De-Oracle,” revealed that the incident occurred over five years ago, on January 4, 2020.
“The police officers involved were immediately identified, tried, and appropriately sanctioned following the disciplinary procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.
“It was also established that the video was deliberately recycled and re circulated to mislead the public and create unnecessary and unwarranted tension between the police and law-abiding citizens.”
